Overview
I know. We are being flooded with advice on what to do to stay safe during the coronavirus pandemic. However, I want to share with you five things I am personally doing that you may have not considered.
Stay Out of the Healthcare System
Now is not the time to visit the doctor’s office or a hospital if it can be avoided. You must be hyper vigilant about staying healthy and avoiding injury.
Think about it. First, the healthcare system is stressed at best. Second, do you want to put yourself into an environment of potentially highly contagious people in the middle of a pandemic?
Many of us are at home with ample time to spare. Now is not the time to trim the trees, clean the gutters or do anything that could make you prone to injury. Evaluate what you are doing and mitigate the risk of injury.
Move When Others Aren’t
Social distancing is now the norm, as it is proving to be one of the most effective ways to minimize exposure to the coronavirus. Taking it a step further, try to completely avoid others in the first place.
I had to pick up some items the other day. I woke up at 5:30am and it was storming out. This was my opportunity. The store opened at 6:00am and the heavy rain would surely keep most people away. Sure enough, the store was empty and it was easy for me to maintain distance from the checker. Contact with others was kept to a bare minimum.
In summary, embrace inconvenience as the majority will not.
Establish a Routine
Working from home, being on self-quarentine and minimizing human interaction requires an adjustment period. Do your best to establish a routine.
Plan your day. Balance work, education, fitness, family and nutrition. By maintaining a routine, you will stay productive and the time will pass quickly. Focus on what you can control.
Understand the Timelines
While we are all focusing on the timeline of the coronavirus itself, there is the all important timeline of human behavior that we must consider. I don’t anticipate widespread unrest, but it must be considered.
As a nation we are approaching just a week into limitations and widespread unemployment. Many people are already stretched thin. The first of the month is approaching and for many rent and mortgages are due. The potential for people’s behavior to change for the worse is a real possibility.
As always, take your self-defense seriously and maintain a heightened awareness.
Social Responsibility: Fulfill Your Obligation
Understand that being vigilant, practicing social distancing and considering the well-being of others is part of the greater social responsibility we all share. How we prevail and when will be determined by the actions of society as a whole.
Conclusion
Stay positive and understand that this will pass. Mitigate the problems you face and focus on the variables you control. Accept inconvenience as a necessity for the short term and the path towards a better tomorrow.
