I have been playing the Alto Saxophone since Middle School. I played in the Stage Band, Marching Band, and Orchestra. I even was part of a High School Garage Band, laying down on the horn!
“REED MAN IS IN THE HOUSE!” Was my notoriety, LOL.
After High School, I played around with different music and took part in different bands having fun…not much money, but loads of fun!
Today, I play in the Church Orchestra and special music from time to time.
So, how does playing the saxophone have the potential to save your life?
Anyone who plays an instrument or sings, knows the phrase “Sight Reading”. This is when you play or perform at sight without preparation. While this can be challenging and help improve skill, the ultimate for playing or performing live is with PRACTICE! It is best to practice the music ahead of time…but, even in a pinch, I will sit with the hymn book in front of me, saxophone in hand, fingers on perspective keys, and I will go through the music without blowing through the horn. Just fingering each note with the right timing and syncopation.
What am I doing?
I am going through real-scenario training! When the actual time to play for the congregation comes, I have been there before! I have gone through the act of each note, at the proper timing with the correct syncopation. My mind and muscle doesn’t differentiate between the practice and the real performance.
When I am tasked with the need, I am able to perform and it sounds good! What sets our self-defense courses apart from martial arts is the real-scenario training. You learn life saving skills that when you need to “perform”, you have “been there before”! Your mind -muscle connection is spot on!
