I was born on the shores of the Atlantic, in La Coruña, a city in northwestern Spain that is home to the oldest working Roman lighthouse in the world. It’s called the Tower of Hercules because legend has it that Hercules is buried underneath it. I tell you, no matter how hard you dig, it’s easier to find Hunter Biden’s common sense than the bones of a mythological demigod. Be that as it may, I was born there, and that solves a good part of the enigma of why I am Spanish.
The issue of happiness, or the mystery of how one can be happy having been born on the Old Continent, is also explained by Spanishness itself. Our constitution, unlike the American one, does not include the right to the pursuit of happiness, but the truth is that Spaniards generally do not take it as a right but as an obligation. That is why we are so good at drinking, eating, and amassing ex-girlfriends.
Today my country celebrates Hispanic Day, a celebration analogous to Columbus Day, which the Left now wants to decaffeinate with its eternal whining about indigenism (in other words, it is looking for another collective to tutor and deceive). Luckily, we still have former President Donald Trump, whose timely detection of all the battles that the Left knows are important and that the Right insists on undervaluing has caused him in the past to jump into the ring and demand that the United States celebrate Columbus Day again and leave, I guess, the indigenous nonsense for former Bolivian President Evo Morales and current Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who incidentally is such a moron that he wrote a letter to the king of Spain demanding that my country apologize for having brought civilization to his country, and for founding it.
Apparently, Obrador would have preferred that conquistador Hernán Cortés had turned a blind eye while the Aztecs sacrificed children on altars to pagan gods in bloody and gruesome rituals or while they practiced cannibalism. But that does not go with the Christian spirit that has always guided the destiny of Spain in its great deeds, and which is why they put an end to that monstrous hell without losing sight in any of their colonial adventures of the prohibition of slavery and respect for the dignity of the Indians as ordered by Queen Isabella, a Catholic, in a foundational milestone of human rights that the Left — and the old-fashioned English who still promote the Spanish Black Legend — is desperate to erase, without much success.
These days, when globalism is trying to unify and control everything, it is especially pleasing for me when I see other nations in exultant and patriotic celebration of their heritage. I always find joy in the United States’ Fourth of July, as well as the patriotic movements that are triumphing in France, Italy, Hungary, and Poland, among others. In Spain, despite the determination of the Left to destroy our own history, the Vox party is growing strong, and last weekend it held a great musical, cultural, patriotic, and political festival in which leaders such as Trump, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the wonderful Argentinean madman politician Javier Milei, acclaimed in Madrid as a true rock star, participated in person or on television. Most nations have a few things to be proud of in their history, a common tradition to preserve, and an immortal soul that, under no circumstances, should we allow to be possessed and debased by the Left. Conservatism looks with pride and respect to the past, without wanting to erase the black traces of history, precisely because both the good and the bad are what build history. The Left has invented revanchist historicism, which consists of rewriting history, as they are trying to do with the Spanish accomplishments in the Americas, in such a crude and indecent way that today, on this day of Hispanidad, I can only thank my ancestors for their efforts in bringing the civilization and religion they believed best to the rest of the world and feel proud enough of them to make the Left feel concerned.
For one day, and not wishing to create precedent, my dear American readers, I do want to boast of happy Spanishness and, above all, to debunk that old Spanish ditty that said, “If he praises England, he must be English; if he speaks ill of Prussia, he is a Frenchman; and if he speaks ill of Spain, he is a Spaniard.”
Happy Hispanic Day and Happy Columbus Day — we will raise all the toppled statues! Viva España! Viva the United States of America!
