Anita Dunn and other senior members of the Biden campaign made the disastrous decision to put the mentally incompetent Joe Biden in the earliest presidential debate of modern times. The debate revealed Biden’s cognitive decline to such an extent that he was forced to pull out of the race.
Now, Dunn is trying to save face. She claims that the problem wasn’t the fact that Biden was put into the debate — or even that he performed badly. No, she says, the problem was the way the media and leaders of the Democratic Party reacted to his performance.
In an interview with Politico that was published today, Dunn says that there wasn’t “much movement whatsoever” in the polls following the debate. Voters who had watched the debate, she asserted, “hated Donald Trump” and “very much liked a lot of the second half of the debate for Joe Biden.” The Biden campaign’s strategy of holding an early debate, she said, “absolutely worked” insofar as it reminded people of how much they really don’t like Trump.
Dunn argued, “What did change [the race] was 24 days of unremitting negative, horrible attacks on Joe Biden.”
In addition to the media, Dunn blames Democratic leaders including Nancy Pelosi, Hakeem Jeffries, and Chuck Schumer for the demise of the Biden campaign. These leaders, she asserted, decided to drive Biden out when “it looked like we were reaching a point where we would fight our way through it.” Had those leaders not decided to go public against Biden, she claimed, the race would have gone on relatively unaffected by Biden’s debate performance.
Dunn said that she had no doubts about sending Biden out to debate Trump and claimed that she believed it “would help the campaign enormously.” The president, she said, was “fairly well prepared” after his debate prep, and she saw nothing to suggest that he would perform the way he did in the debate.
Considering everything we’ve observed about Joe Biden, it’s inconceivable that Dunn could have been unaware of the enormous risk involved in placing Biden on the debate stage. This is the man who, when he called a press conference after the special counsel report described him as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” referred to the president of Egypt as “the president of Mexico.” Biden routinely slurs through his speech, trails off suddenly, and forgets what things are called. His debate performance was an absolute disaster of confused and jumbled speech, but it was hardly unforeseeable. Before the debate, I wrote, “The debate will put Biden’s diminished mental alacrity on full display…. [T]he debate could very well reveal the extent to which Biden has fallen, forcing him to end his campaign.”
Anita Dunn messed up big time in an entirely foreseeable way — and she’s blaming everyone but herself.
Of course, if Anita Dunn had any degree of patriotism, she would have spoken up long ago about Biden’s cognitive decline and unfitness for office.
