Hunting camp cuisine has a (frequently undeserved) reputation for being kinda slovenly. These recipes can help change that.

Is it your first season in the woods, or one of many? Want to know how to prepare food for the hunting camps or are you are a professional who plans delicious meals under somewhat primitive circumstances? These recipes can come to the rescue. 

Dutch oven cooking is a natural for hunting camp foods.

When hunting in the wilderness, food is fuel, and the priorities are delicious and easy-to-cook meals. Feeding is very important not only to your health but also to your spirit. Here are several top recipes for hunting camps that are also great for the work week. 

Ranging from thick and warming stew and casserole to on-the-go snacks and energy-providing drinks, these recipes cater to the outdoor enthusiast’s appetite. All the recipes use easily-found ingredients. There are plenty of  hunting camp cook jobs on Jooble.        

1. Hunting Camp Casserole

A Hunting Camp Casserole is a one-pan dish that lets you experience the robust flavors of the great outdoors. This comforting casserole starts a delicious foundation of savory pork sausage, infused with a blend of herbs and spices. Tender kidney beans, or your choice of other legumes, can then be added to the mix. This combination can be made before hand and warmed up to  provide a boost of protein and fiber to fuel the next adventure.

Ingredients:

    • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
    • 1 small finely diced onion
    • 1 (15 oz) drained can corn 
    • 2 (8 oz) cans tomato sauce
    • 1 (15 oz) can Ranch style beans
    • 1/3 cup flour
    • 2/3 cup yellow cornmeal
    • 1 tablespoon baking powder
    • Salt
    • 2 tablespoons sugar
    • 3/4 cup milk
    • 3 eggs
    • 1/2 cup shredded cheese

Instructions:

      1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
      2. Brown sausage and onions in an oven-safe pan, over medium-high heat for 6 minutes.
      3. Stir in tomato sauce, corn, and beans; simmer for an additional 6 minutes.
      4. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, cornmeal, sugar, and salt. Then stir in milk and eggs. Mix all until combined.
      5. Place the meat on a sheet pan and spoon batter over, then bake for 20 min. Then add cheese on top and bake for a further 6 minutes or until melted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=videoseries

2. Ramen Hot Pot

For a person who stays in a hunting camp on a cold day, what can be better than a Ramen Hot Pot? This filling and nourishing casserole is ideal after spending time in cold weather enjoying outdoor activities. Served hot, with soft noodles and accompanied by a myriad of delicious garnishes, the steaming broth is just the best to eat in wintertime. 

Ingredients:

      • Instant ramen noodles
      • Cooked ground meat (beef or chicken)
      • Mixed vegetables (carrots, corn, bok choy)
      • Eggs (optional)
      • Seasoning packets or your favorite sauce

Instructions:

      1. Boil water in a pot.
      2. Add the cooked meat and vegetables; let simmer.
      3. Add ramen noodles and cook until soft.
      4. Stir in eggs if desired for extra protein.
      5. Serve hot.

3. Cajun Fish Wraps with Slaw

If you are looking for something delicious and hassle-free to take along, Cajun Fish Wraps with Slaw is something you shouldn’t miss out on.  A wonderful combination of texture and flavor is combined with more tender, spice-rubbed fish fillets, and a crunchy, tangy slaw.   • Fish fillets (your choice)
  • Cajun seasoning

Instructions:

  1. Season fish fillets with Cajun seasoning and cook in a skillet until done.
  2. Prepare slaw by mixing cabbage with mayonnaise and vinegar.
  3. Assemble wraps by placing fish and slaw in tortillas; roll up and enjoy.

Snacks and Quick Meals

Don’t forget to include easy snacks like jerky, trail mix, or fruit to keep energy levels up during hunting trips. Simple sandwiches or wraps can also be made quickly during breaks. The key is to have a variety of easy-to-eat, energy-dense snacks, and light meals readily available.
