That there’s nothing new under the sun isn’t news, but history (as we know) seems to work in cycles that often repeat earlier epochs.
Back in 1986 as a Latin America Foreign Area Officer for the US Army, I wrote a master’s thesis on the Chilean coup d’etat of 1973, the conditions of which paralleled much of what’s been going on in America the last 30 years or so. The coup that ousted Marxist president Salvador Allende installed a military dictatorship that lasted until 1990.
Things in Chile in ‘73 had reached about the same stage we are in now. The populace divided sharply between Left and Right. The Left incited riots in the universities and streets. The press did its part to stir things up, so that people read the newspapers that matched their politics. Allende overlooked egregious lawlessness by the Left and ostentatiously announced he was not the President of all Chileans. Things looked grim. They sounded grim.
They were grim.
Luckily for Chile, there were men in positions of authority who loved their country more than they loved power. These men forcibly ended the Marxist takeover bid that had wrecked the economy, savaged social harmony and ravaged the countryside. Since then ignorant pundits and lazy scholars have trashed General Augusto Pinochet, leader of the coup, but Pinochet saved Chile from becoming a second Cuba.
The experience showed why defeating communism is such an arduous, ugly task. Commies won’t let it be otherwise. They won’t live and let live. No compromise. No negotiation. Agree with them 100% or die. This is what Pinochet faced. He fought back just as viciously as his enemies did, for which the communist press worldwide blackened his name forever.
Fast forward five decades to the American Southwest. In the recent elections Arizona repeated 2020. Nothing changed. No floors swept, no trash cans emptied, no broken windows replaced. The Left cheated again and “won” again even with a Republican governor. During his tenure that Republican governor made no noticeable effort to clean things up.

The America I served during 21 Army years is long gone. It took just over a century to wither out completely, from about 1913 to today. Not so much from wars as treason. Lies. Corruption. Incompetence. Such were the poisons served up by people with names such as Wilson. Roosevelt. Johnson. Bush. Clinton. Obama. Biden.
Sometimes it’s cathartic to imagine myself a Terminator going back in time to save America.
Like what happened in Chile 50 years ago.
