The latest round of charges against Hunter Biden has shellshocked mainstream media reporters used to ignoring negative stories about the Biden administration, so much so that even a top investigative reporter with CBS News admits it could spell deep trouble for President Joe Biden.
Catherine Herridge, reporting from Washington, D.C., laid out how the new indictment of Hunter by special counsel David Weiss could badly damage the president’s reelection prospects.
“Subpoenas have been issued for his business partner, the president’s brother James Biden, and that would go to the idea of [Foreign Affairs Registration Act], working together on behalf of foreign interests,” Herridge told her colleague Friday morning.
The 56-page indictment, issued late Thursday, carries against Hunter three counts each of evasion of a tax assessment, failure to file and pay taxes, and filing a false or fraudulent tax return. As Herridge alludes, even more charges may soon hit Hunter for failing to register as a lobbyist on behalf of a foreign entity, something that the indictment indicates may have occurred when he profited from business deals with companies in China, Ukraine, and elsewhere.
The position of Hunter’s defense attorneys “has been that he accepts responsibility for this period in his life, but he in no way admitted that he had been lobbying on behalf of those entities,” she added.

To avoid FARA charges, Hunter’s attorneys will have to discredit a mountain of evidence showing he earned millions while representing companies like Burisma Holdings and CEFC while keeping the White House up to date about his work when his father was serving as vice president. Devon Archer, a former business partner with whom Hunter had a falling out, has since come forward granting testimony that they collaborated to bring President Biden into dozens of meetings with foreign leaders who were seeking his influence in Washington.
The addition of new charges against Hunter also represents the increased power granted to Weiss, the special counsel, after being elevated to the role by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. Whistleblowers with the IRS have claimed that Weiss was originally denied the role as he sought to expand his investigation beyond his borders in Delaware, citing in part refusals by fellow U.S. Attorneys in California to bring the charges that just hit Hunter. Some of those prosecutors have been shown to have donated to Vice President Kamala Harris.
President Biden has denied his involvement in foreign business transactions with his son, though House Republicans continue to chase a trail of cash through various shell companies, some of which ultimately made its way into Biden’s bank account.
