No Mis-Steak: Kamala Harris’s Campaign Against Red Meat

Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party, earned the title of “most liberal” senator in 2019 from GovTrack. According to 270toWin.com, she’s also polling behind Trump nationally and in all swing states. Plans to change America’s diet may have contributed to those numbers.

2020 Presidential Race

In 2019, during a CNN climate change town hall before Harris dropped out of the 2020 presidential race, she was asked “[i]f elected, will you be supporting a change in [USDA] dietary guidelines, and then how will you plan on implementing the changes so that people effectively change their diets?” (READ MORE: Kamala’s Anti-Semitism Problem)

Her answer? “We have a problem in America… The answer is yes.”

In her response to the question, she advocated for ensuring that the American public is “educated about the effect of our eating habits on our environment. We have to do a much better job at that, and the government has to do a much better job at that.”

Later during the town hall, Harris was also asked by CNN’s Erin Burnett about changing dietary guidelines and the food pyramid to specifically reduce red meat consumption, to which Kamala responded “Yes, I would.”

Although ordinary Americans don’t typically follow the USDA dietary guidelines, new guidelines would affect many federal-based food assistance programs, military menus, and school lunches. Health professionals often rely on the recommendations put out by the USDA as well.

The topic, particularly on red meat, has resurfaced since Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee for the presidency. (READ MORE: Kamala Almost Slid Into the White House by Disguise)

John Grenci, an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention, told The American Spectator that restrictions on red meat consumption “would be like prohibition. There’d be an uproar in the streets.” He also expressed doubt that restrictions would come to fruition. “It could never happen,” he said. Nevertheless, this is yet another example of a politician’s needless attempts to interfere in everyday life.

Supporters of Harris have also pointed out that Harris is not in favor of explicitly banning red meat, but rather in favor of using government-created “incentives” to reduce red meat consumption. These viewpoints are shared with other leaders such as Senators Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, and Elizabeth Warren who also support eliminating factory farming by 2040.

Harris has not responded to the debate surrounding her diet-inducing policies, nor rescinded her stance on the issue.
