The box of logs suddenly resembles a log cabin.

The roofline gives a glimpse of my future home. There are many more steps to make it livable, but I needed this boost of hope.

Ridgepole Support Logs

Three ridgepole support logs (RPSL) are installed on the two outside walls, and one in the middle of the cabin. They do what their name implies, support the large ridgepole.

The first two rest on the foundation piers vertically against the front and back walls. Once set and plumbed, we strapped the RPSL to the wall and drilled holes through the wall logs and RPSL. 5/8″ all-tread secures the RPSL firmly to the wall.

We used a 2.5″ Forstner bit on the interior wall logs before drilling the 5/8″ hole. This allowed us to countersink the all-thread and nut which will be filled later with a wooden peg to hide the bolts.

Setting the Ridgepole

With the two outside RPSL’s installed, we were ready set the ridgepole. DJ gently sat the ridgepole on top of the two RPSL’s. I climbed the wooden scaffold next to the first RPSL, drilled through the ridgepole into the RPSL, and hammered a stick of 1/2″ rebar to secure the union. We repeated these steps on the other RPSL.

To stabilize the ridgepole, we installed one set of log rafters and knocked off for the day.

Installing the middle RPSL was bit more challenging in my mind. This support log, cut 3/8″ proud, needed to be wedged under the ridgepole on the center foundation pier. My idea was to get it close and pound it plumb with a sledgehammer at the top of the support log. A couple of swings while on top of a 30 foot extension ladder was like shooting an elephant with a BB gun.

DJ, not only operates the boom with precision, but, has superpowers when we need mechanical solutions. In his usual southern draw, he says, “Let’s put the top of the support log under the ridgepole and let the boom do the work.” A true man of genius!

We followed along and the center RPSL slide into place with ease. All-thread attached the support log to the girder beam. Rebar was then hammered through the ridgepole into the middle RPSL. Now the ridgepole is supported with three points of contact at 15 foot sections.

The Tale of Two Rafters

On my Practice Cabin (12’x16′), we simply sank one screw in the top of two 2×6 rafters so they would hinge open to sit on the ridgepole. Easy peasy. In theory, this same technique would work for larger, longer, heavier log rafters. I’d just use 5/8″ rebar for the hinge pin.

Theory doesn’t always produce desired results.

Day two began with over two hours experimenting with different rigging techniques to get the bolted rafter set spread apart and off the ground without scissoring back together. Frank’s idea finally offered a solution… so we thought.

The rafter set was lifted in nearly a flat plane (see pic above). However, once the hinge touched the ridgepole, the rafter set lost its middle support and the tails would come down on the wall logs with reckless abandon. We stuck with this method for a few sets. Yet another problem became apparent.

When building with dimensional lumber, the hinge pin can be centered so the rafters are level across the roof. When building with “carrots”, not so much. While one flat side of the rafter would sit level, the other one would cant down due to the hinge bolt not being exactly centered. I figured we’d have to shim the un-level rafter later.

We finally abandoned this lifting technique when a rafter set rolled as it was lowered on the ridgepole. The flat side was facing down instead of up. This set had to be lifted off the ridgepole and back to the ground.

For safety reasons, we started setting rafters one pole at a time (see pic below). The rafter could be rigged at the approximate roof pitch on the ground. This revolutionized the process. I wish we had done this from day one. Hindsight, huh?

We only pinned the rafters to the ridgepole. The rafter tails need to be notched/shimmed to make the flat side of the rafters as level as possible. Also, as I mentioned earlier, those bolted rafters which twisted when set will have to be reworked. Remember, I’m building with a bunch of carrots.

Spacious Main Compartment

When we loaded up the Maxpedition Falcon III for a weekend hike, the spaciousness of the main compartment was a pleasant surprise.

It comfortably accommodated most of our gear, including a lightweight jacket, a small tent, and essential tools. The pack’s design makes use of every inch, providing a roomy storage area without being bulky.

We did note, however, that while the compartment is generous, it’s also quite deep. This means that organizing smaller items can be a challenge. A few internal pockets would have been helpful. Despite this, the ample space is a boon, especially for those of us who prefer to have everything in one place.

In everyday use, the compartment proves to be versatile. It can easily transition from an outdoor pack to an urban carry-all, fitting laptops, books, and other daily necessities. It’s a testament to the thoughtfulness behind the Falcon III’s design.

CCW Pocket for Large Pistols

We’ve taken the Falcon III Backpack out for a spin, and our backs and shoulders are thanking us for it.

The 3D breathable mesh padding on both the back and shoulder straps has been a game changer. Even after hours of carrying a full load, we noticed significantly less strain compared to similar backpacks.

This Falcon III handles hikes, urban commutes, and school runs with surprising ease.

Yes, it’s robust and made to face the elements, but that doesn’t mean they’ve compromised on comfort.

The shoulder straps adjust easily, preventing any awkward fitting, and the pack sits just right against the back, maintaining a good weight distribution.

However, despite the many positives, we did find that when fully packed, accessing the main compartment was a touch more challenging.

And while the pack doesn’t dig in, the straps could use a tad more cushion for those longer treks. But, overall, this backpack carries its weight comfortably, living up to the Maxpedition name.

From the moment we laid hands on the Falcon III Backpack, the robust construction was evident.

In today’s society, we trade currency for the things we need. Post collapse, of course, will see that change to a barter system of trade. Now, one must understand that bartering only works when both parties involved have both a need for something someone else has in surplus and a constant supply of the things the other party needs. If one party has nothing of value to offer the other party, the system doesn’t work.

Here are a few rules to consider when planning your bartering system.

1 – Never trade in anything addictive.

Lots of preppers produce alcohol. It’s great as a fuel for alcohol stoves, an excellent disinfectant for food preparation surfaces, as well as a good alternative antiseptic for cleaning wounds. Another item many preppers produce is tobacco. Tobacco is a great pest deterrent and is pretty easy to grow. Marijuana has lots of proven medicinal properties, which can be useful when medications are no longer available.

The problem with all of these is that they are also addictive substances. When addicts can’t get their fix, they tend to get squirrely. If they know you have what will give them their fix, they may decide to get squirrely on you, just to satisfy their cravings. Now, of course you have figured out your security, and any attempt by someone to loot your stockpiles would be likely to fail, it’s a situation you don’t need to take your attention away from other concerns. It’s a headache you don’t need or want to deal with.

2 – Always trade in renewables

Trading items that you can’t produce yourself will eventually deplete your stockpile. Only trade in items that you can produce, such as food or energy. Food can be grown and energy can be produced. For food, all you really need is earth and seeds. Mother nature takes care of the rest. As for energy, charging batteries from a solar panel is easy and requires no labour input once installed. If you have a larger, treed property, trading in firewood is a great idea, so long as you don’t over harvest the resource. A healthy woodlot can provide about 1/2 cord of firewood per acre and still remain sustainable.

3 – Never trade away your abilities

The single most piece of bad prepper advice I have heard over and over again is the idea of trading seeds. While this may be a popular barter item at the beginning of a collapsed society, one would soon realize that they have traded away their ability to maintain a barter relationship. Once people have seeds, they can produce their own seeds, and therefor no longer have an interest in trading with you for the things you need from them. Instead, trade them for the food that the seeds produce.

This is also true for skills. Instead of giving someone the skills to build a structure, go build it for them. This will ensure that they will be back for the labour and in turn offer you something in exchange that you need. In a nutshell, don’t trade away your value. Your value is what keeps the barter system going.

Remember, the only reason to engage in bartering is to acquire the things you need that you are unable to produce yourself and to keep the trades amicable. If no one has a need for the things you offer or if you can’t supply a constant source of barter items, you don’t have the leverage you need to obtain that which you need. Also, if someone may be willing to loot you for your barter goods, then engaging in trade with those items invites unwanted attention.

Is it because of hackers, script kiddies, bots, and an extensive, massed collection of worldwide evil-doers? Possibly. Is it because they were jealous of something that they could not do themselves? Maybe.

Here we are, in the second week of February 2023, and yet DAILY I have to deal with hackers trying to break into the backend of this website, even though I block every attempt of their trying to brute force their way into the “good stuff”. I get emails with every failed attempt to gain access, with their IP address (xx.xxx.xxx.xx), usernames (some of the most simpleton variations), country of origin (I’ve blocked dozens including Russia, China, most middle eastern nations, and more), and more. Here’s an example of the email I get…

Who They Are…

They…are all over the world. They…exist in almost every nation. They…need any computer…or smartphone. They…don’t care what havoc they wreak on unsuspecting (or suspecting) webmasters. They…want free stuff…or notoriety. They…are simply LOSERS. Fuck’em all. 

In the last 40 years (yes, going back to 1983 when I was running dialup BBS systems), the hacks existed even then. The first few were friends I thought I could trust…until I learned I couldn’t. Then, community members seeing what they could get away with… until they couldn’t. There will ALWAYS be attempts to destroy the honest work of folks who do good things because THAT’S who they are. 

Getting on the internet in 1995 only made the threats so much more widespread. But, I was learning with each passing day how these dipwads never, ever stopped. 

 

Where They’re From

Every nation you think would be an enemy of the freedom and liberty of America. Yeah, who knew?

Here are a few pages just from the last several days of hack attempts, with each IP address being permanently blocked …

I’ve seen multiple attempts with the same username (even non-existent users) try to log in from a dozen different IP addresses from all over the world, and because of my security settings, not gotten in ONCE. These attempts irk me to no end, but it comes with the territory for a quarter-century-old website. I’m now using AI to block these trolls…and it’s working.

I’ve also turned off the REGISTER link because once hackers know what content management system you’re using for your website, there are prewritten hack scripts that will try to break in. I’ll set up a page for folks who want access to supporter-only content, but because of the daily hacks, it will most likely be a subscription model. 

What They Want

Free stuff, keys to the gate, privacy info, free downloads, to mess with minds, to be assholes (of which ALL of these pricks are really good at).

My job is to stop them…and I’m quite good at it now.

How I’m stopping them…and why you should care...

The CMS I’m using, I’ve been using for projects for 19 years now. I’m running a half dozen software tools on the backend that STOP these nimrods from gaining access. I’m permanently blocking their IP address, their usernames, and even whole countries…because I have to. It’s par for the course. My desktop is also healthily locked down, with a broadband approach to keep the losers at bay. 

By keeping things locked tight, I can allow access to who and where I want. Yeah, it’s inconvenient at times, but it sure beats the alternative. 

Secure Yourself & Your Hardware

Use the most secure browser you can find. Run antimalware and antivirus tools on your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Keep them updated. Use a VPN to access your more trusted websites. Set your firewall as tightly as possible on every device. 

I’ve repaired dozens of computers for friends and coworkers over the last 20 years…who had not taken even the first step toward cyber security. The set of tools I use are all FREE. Why? Because they WORK.

Bottom Line…

Our world is on the brink of world war 3. China is sending spy balloons, drones, and more over our sovereign territory. Russia and China are testing our border security. Several other nations are just waiting for things to break loose, so they can get in and get what they want, the moment our attention is turned toward these OTHER potential threats. 

Online, tens of millions of bot networks are trying every computer, every port, every server, and every browser they can get to, to find well-known hacks, vulnerabilities, and “man in the middle” attacks, spoofing well-known financial, e-commerce, or other hooks, they provide them the keys to steal all the data they can. It’s all about the money.

Why It Matters…

If things that are important to all of us are to be valued, someone has to stand up for what is right and just in our world. 

Our current national posture is all about negating the good, providing support to the bad…to cancel justice, investment, truth, and all that is whole and welcome in our world…to replace it with cancel culture, racism, deceit, treachery, and overthrow.

That’s what we’re all seeing now, and have for the last 7 years from the communists and socialists in power. I’ll stay online, as long as I have breath to breathe the truth, whenever and wherever. Being prepared is about creating alternatives to the conspiratorial left-wing shit stirrers.

Complete Guide from A-eZ

In looking for more information around Solar Power and the flexibility it offers, Mobile Solar Power provided great instruction. This book offers everything from a beginner level introduction, to how to crimp a cable, and ends at troubleshooting and maintenance.

While most engineers have a difficult time staying out of the techno-babble, the authors have been able to take a complex subject and help guide the reader learn about solar power. The book takes them to the point of full installation after they have planned, sized, and designed their system in a very simple manner with great examples.

One of the main things I enjoyed about this book, was that the authors did not tell you what to purchase, size, or install. Instead they showed the reader how to determine and size what they need for the application they were wanting. This applied to off-grid, on-grid, RVs, houses, and even boats. The information in these pages apply to any type of design imaginable at a very easy to understand level. 

I am very pleased to add this book to my reference library and will be used frequently for my different needs and applications.

• Automated Waterers: Animals must always have access to water. You can build an automated DIY chicken-watering system or a gravity-released watering system. Typically, these hold several gallons of water so that you can go days without refilling.
• Stock Tank Floats: Stock tank float valves are an old-fashioned way to automate water systems. The stock tank float controls the water level in stock tanks, troughs, and barrels. When water goes below the float, the valve opens, which allows more water to refill the trough. 

Automating Irrigation Systems

In addition to drinking water for their animals, homesteaders can automate irrigation systems to ensure their crops get the water they need. 

• Timers for Watering Gardens: A simple way to automate watering is to use controlled timers. Simply connect water sources or sprinklers to timers and your watering is automated.

Smart plugs are power plugs connected to Wi-Fi that act like remote-controlled power switches. With a smart plug, you can control most basic functions using an app. For example, you can install a smart plug inside your chicken coop that allows you to turn on and off the lights as needed.

Similarly, if you utilize plant lights indoors, you can use smart plugs to control these lights or schedule them to operate at different times. 

You can even use a smart plug to control the air or heat inside different homestead spaces, such as turning on a fan or brooder light.

Automate Temperature

Temperature is extremely important for homesteads in different areas. A too-hot greenhouse will result in dead plants. A too-cold water dish will result in dehydration.
